The Growing Flower Magic Trick

This trick is performed with a wide-mouthed jar which is about 10 in. high. If an earthern jar of this kind is not at hand, use a glass fruit jar and cover it with black cloth or paper, so the contents cannot be seen.

Flower Grows Instantly

Two pieces of wire are bent as shown in Fig. 1 and put together as in Fig. 2.
These wires are put in the jar, about one-third the way down from the top, with the circle centrally located.
The wires can be held in place by carefully bending the ends, or using small wedges of wood.

Cut a wire shorter in length than the height of the jar and tie a rose or several flowers on one end.
Put a cork in the bottom of the jar and stick the opposite end of the wire from where the flowers are tied through the circle of the two wires and into the cork.
The dotted lines in Fig. 3 show the position of the wires and flowers.

To make the flowers grow in an instant, pour water into the jar at one side of the wide mouth.
The cork will float and carry the wire with the flowers attached upward, causing the flowers to grow, apparently, in a few seconds time.
Do not pour in too much water to raise the flowers so far that the wire will be seen.

Fragrant Foliage

If you’ve ever brushed against a scented-leaved Pelargonium like the one above (or any other fragrant-leaved plant) and noticed the scent, here’s where that fragrance is actually stored. The leaves are covered in fine pointed hairs (second photo from bottom) but scattered amongst them there are two other kinds of hair – short (third from bottom) and tall (fourth photo from bottom). At higher magnification (top photo) you can see the oily fragrance compounds stored in the bulbous cell at the tip of the hairs, that are released when the hairs are damaged. These fragrance chemicals are a key part of the plant’s defence system against insects and are secretions that either make the leaf too sticky for small insects to move around or repel them, but commercially they are of immense importance in the fragrance industry. Many of those scents that saturate the air around the perfume counter in department stores contained chemical compounds distilled from the ‘gunk’ that you can see in these plant hair tips. Perhaps the most extraordinary is labdanum, which is stored in the sticky hairs of Cretan rock roses (Cistus species). Tradionally, this was once collected by scraping it off the fur of goats that grazed amongst the Cistus shrubs on Cretan hillsides. You can read about it at http://botano.gr/herbs-and-spices/cistus-creticus-labdanum.html

Getting a Grip

The colour of a flower is the result of a combination of the floral pigments contained in the petal cells and the optical characteristics of the cells themselves, which is why the colour of flowers in photographs doesn’t always correspond exactly with what the eye sees. The cells walls act like lenses, bending and scattering light rays, producing optical effects that combine with the floral pigment colours to produce unique hues, so even a brick red geranium flower shows a bluish tinge from certain angles (bottom picture). These photos show the cells on the surface of a geranium (Pelargonium) petal, which in surface view look like a patchwork blanket, with the patches stitched together (second picture from bottom x100). A side-on view reveals that each cell is actually shaped like a small hill, and that the ‘stitches’ are really pleats (third picture from bottom x100 and fourth picture from bottom x200). The conical cells are typical of many petal surfaces of flowers visited by insects. So why are they this shape? Their lens-like properties contribute to flower colours but their shape and surface texture seems to have evolved to give the claws of pollinating insects like bees (top picture x100) something to grip. By the clever use of mutant forms of snapdragon that have flat, smooth petal surface cells rather than conical ones, Dr. Beverley Glover at Cambridge University’s Department of Plant Sciences has shown that bees avoid smooth petal surfaces because it’s difficult for their claws to grip them and gain enough purchase to force their tongues into the flower. So ultimately it’s the necessity of giving insects a foothold that has produced petal cells with optical properties that add complexity and subtlety to flower colours. TOP 10 FAVOURITE SONGS WESTERN MUSIC ALL GENRES 2014 PART 3

The last two posts of these series posts are here and here. This is the last post of the series as here I will be adding the next four songs.

US AND THEM

Absorbing song.I remember the first time I listened to this. This was my first proper impression of Pink Floyd, the first song I listened to was Another Brick In the Wall (Part 1) followed by this. And I was in a complete realm of the thing.I thought about it for hours.Especially the last line left me hard stricken - "For the price of a tea and a slice, the old man died!".I could speak of nothing else for a day or two.The tune is good, instrumentals are even better,Lyrics is bravo, voice is David Gilmour (No more adjectives necessary).Lyrics here.

Us and Them - The First Impression of Floyd to me

THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (Origianlly written by David Bowie)

This one is truly one of the best songs I have ever heard, keeping in mind the Kurt Cobain impact.I am not as big a fan of Nirvana as I am of Pink Floyd but Cobain definitely had potential. Lyrics and Perspectives here. You know, just it immediately instigated all my thoughts about the stars, this universe, souls, origin and everything of that sort. You have to love this song - its so much unique. The instrumentals are okay with a regular but attractive tune and the lyrics are just out of the world.

SPEED OF SOUND (From Soundtrack To The End)

I know you might not have heard about the song or the band. But I personally like them a lot. Its from Communist Daughter(Again,Thanks Houston Communist Party for introducing this) and recently they even liked my status on their wall on their Facebook Page! Elation and pleasure.I like the way they move through North America - watching, just WATCHING Bohemian life is feel-good to me.The Lyrics are great - just great. It almost got me off balance when I got them for the first time. The tune is not so special and the instrumentals are okay(I like Mollys harmony, anyway.) - the concern is the lyrics.Must listen at least once.

KNOCKIN ON HEAVENS DOOR

As per I have heard, this song was written by Che Guevara himself. And I personally prefer the Guns N Roses Version (I dont understand this band politically .What are they - right-wings extremist or anarchist or socialist,I dont know.)You can listen to the Bob Dylan version as well as he was the first one to compose the tune and get this into form of a song. Lyrics here. Please note that the last rap is added by Guns N Roses, its not there in the original version.I have a lot of emotions attached with this song.

BIOLOGICAL METHOD

Science is a systematized knowledge. Like other sciences, biological sciences also have a set methodology. It is based on experimental inquiry. It always begins with chance observation. Observations are made with five senses viz, vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch, depending upon their functional ability. Observations can both be qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative observations have accuracy over qualitative as in the former variables are measurable and are recorded in terms of numbers. An observer organizes observations into data form and gives a statement as per experience and background knowledge of the event. This statement is the hypothesis, which is tentative explanation of observations. At this stage you should look at the ways of devising hypothesis. There are two ways of formulating hypothesis. A hypothesis can be the result of deductive reasoning or it can be the consequence of inductive reasoning.

Deductive Reasoning:

Deductive reasoning moves from the general to the specific. It involves drawing specific conclusion from some general principle/assumptions. Deductive logic of "if   then" is frequently used to frame testable hypothesis. For example, if we accept that all birds have wings (premise # 1), and that sparrows are birds (premise # 2), then we conclude that sparrows have wings. If all green plants require sunlight for photosynthesis, then any green plant when placed in dark would not synthesize glucose, the end product of photosynthesis. The other way of reasoning used in the formulation of hypothesis is inductive reasoning which is reasoning from the specific to the general. It begins with specific observations, and leads to the formation of general principle. For instance, if we know that sparrows have wings and are birds, and we know that eagle, parrot, hawk, crow are birds, then we induce (draw conclusion) that all birds have wings. The science also, therefore, uses inductive methods to generalize from specific events. In fact sometimes scientists also use other ways to form a hypothesis which may include:

  • (1) Intuition or imagination.
  • (2) Esthetic preference.
  • (3) Religious or philosophical ideas.
  • (4) Comparison and analogy with other processes.
  • (5) Discovery of one thing while looking for some other thing.

These ways can also sometimes form basis for scientific hypothesis. Hypotheses as you already know are subjected to rigorous testing.

Repeated exposure of a hypothesis to possible falsification increases scientists confidence in the hypothesis when it is not falsified. Any hypothesis that is tested again and again without ever being falsified is considered well supported and is generally accepted. This may be used as the basis for formulating further hypothesis. So there is soon a series of hypotheses supported by the results of many tests which is then called a theory. A good theory is predictive and has explanatory power. One of the most important features of a good theory is that it may suggest new and different hypotheses. A theory of this kind is called Productive.

However, even in the case of productive theory the testing goes on. In fact many scientists take it as a challenge and exert even greater efforts to disprove the theory. If a theory survives this skeptical approach and continues to be supported by experimental, it becomes a scientific law. A scientific law is a uniform or constant fact of nature.

Examples of biological laws are Hardy-Weinberg law and Mendle’s law of inheritance.

Concussion definition symptoms treatment

Concussion is an injury to a part of the body resulting from a blow or from a violent shaking.
Concussion usually refers to an injury to the brain, which is commonly caused by a head injury. It may also result from a fall in which the point of impact is the lower end of the spine.

Symptoms of brain concussion

The symptoms of brain concussion vary according to the site and extent of the injury. Brain concussion usually, but not always, produces unconsciousness.
The return to consciousness often occurs gradually. Following the initial injury, there may be headache, difficulty in concentrating, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in focusing, and a feeling of depression and irritability.
Events immediately before the injury may be forgotten at first (retrograde amnesia), but the memory of them usually returns.

Brain concussion treatment

A physician should be consulted in all cases of concussion because there may be more serious brain damage.
Bed rest is essential for at least a day after the injury.
The physician may prescribe painkillers to relieve the headache.
Alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers may aggravate the symptoms.
The patient should avoid sports and work until he or she is completely recovered.

What are the signs of a concussion when observing a person?

The key sign is level of consciousness.
Is the person conscious?
Can the person be aroused?
Other signs worth observing include unequally dilated pupils, an inability to feel or move some body part, or persistent vomiting.
